Frequently Asked Questions
Screendox is a software application created for Indian health care programs. With Screendox, programs can electronically screen their patients for tobacco exposure, tobacco use, alcohol use, depression, suicidal ideation, domestic/intimate partner violence, and/or drug use. Screendox can also identify primary, secondary, and tertiary drugs used. You can customize your system settings to screen for the problem(s) you select.
The patient uses a touchscreen wireless handheld tablet and/or kiosk station to answer the screening questions as part of the vital/triage and/or check-in routine. Immediately after the patient completes the screening, Screendox electronically exports the results to the EHR. The provider has the screening results available (in real-time) to immediately deliver services if needed. The patient screening results can also be viewed using the Screendox Behavioral Health Screening Report and Indicator Reports.
The benefits of using Screendox are:
- Easier and quicker for patients and staff to use.
- Screen every patient as frequently as needed without dependence on staff.
- Screening results are available immediately in the EHR for real-time early identification and intervention.
- Up-to-date patient information and prevalence rate reports. Can monitor screenings results and outcomes by individual department and/or location and/or for all locations.
- Standardizes the screening process across all departments and health center locations.
- Cost less than in-person screening, manual scoring, and data entry.
Tribal, urban Indian, and IHS health care programs can use Screendox. Screenings can be used in primary medical care, emergency rooms, hospitals, behavioral health, dental, pharmacy, etc.

Yes. You can use the features of the Screendox database, including patient records and reports. However, you will not be able to export the results to your EHR.
Screendox uses the CAGE (alcohol), PHQ-2 and PHQ-9 (depression and suicidal ideation), HITS (domestic/intimate partner violence), and the DAST-10 (drug use). Screendox can also collect primary, secondary and tertiary drugs used (SAMHSA standards) if a patient screens positive using the DAST-10. Screendox can ask tobacco exposure and tobacco use questions (smoking, smokeless, and ceremony) based on existing IHS standards. Screendox can collect current contact information (phone number and address) and patient demographic information. If you are interested in using different screening tools, please contact us.
You can choose to screen patients every visit, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, or annually. If you choose annually, for example, when the patient uses Screendox, it will ask them for their first name, middle name (if applicable), last name, and date of birth. Screendox knows whether the patient has been screened during the IHS GPRA report period and will screen the patient if needed. If the patient has already completed the screening for the set time-period, then it will NOT ask any screening questions and it will thank them for their check-in. NOTE: Screendox uses the GPRA calendar year (October 1 to September 30) as the default system calendar. However, reports can be generated for any time-period.
The wireless handheld tablet and kiosk station are data entry points. Patient screening results are not stored in these devices. While a patient answers questions using a handheld tablet or kiosk, the device interacts with the Screendox database located in the secure server at your health center. The screening results are stored in the server. Therefore, private patient information cannot be viewed or retrieved at a handheld tablet or kiosk.
Yes. Screendox electronically scores each screening tool so your staff members do not have to manually score the tools.

The report also has an electronic date and time stamp of when the report was created; the Screendox record number; the EHR health record number; and the visit location.
